Doctoral training in research and innovation is organised exclusively within doctoral schools (ED). All doctoral degrees are prepared within an ED, in a laboratory or team.
Doctoral training is a professional experience which, after defending a thesis, leads to the award of a Ph.D. from the University of Toulouse.

Of the 14 doctoral schools in the Occitanie Ouest area, the university is the supporting institution for 6 doctoral schools and a co-accredited institution for 4 others:

Science, technology and health

Biology, health, biotechnology - BSB
Electrical engineering, electronics, telecommunications and health - GEETS
Mathematics, computer science, telecommunications of Toulouse - MITT
Sciences of matter - SDM
Universe, environment and space sciences - SDU2E
Ecological, veterinary, agronomic and bioengineering sciences - SEVAB
Mechanics, energy, civil engineering, processes - MEGEP
Systems - EDSYS

Humanities and Social Sciences

The programme of activities for doctoral schools is defined by the decree of 25 May 2016. Within this framework, the main missions of doctoral schools are to:
  • offer Ph.D. students training that is useful for their research and career plans, as well as the training necessary to acquire a broad scientific culture. This training must prepare Ph.D. students for careers in research in both academia and industry, but more generally for any career requiring the skills acquired during doctoral training;
  • implement a policy for recruiting high-level Ph.D. students;
  • ensure the quality of supervision of Ph.D. students by laboratories and research teams, and ensuring compliance with the University of Toulouse's thesis charter;
  • raise awareness among Ph.D. students of the importance of defining, from the outset of their thesis, a training programme that will prepare them for their professional integration;
  • organise follow-up on the professional integration of all Ph.D. students that they manage;
  • promote European and international open-mindedness, particularly by promoting international joint supervision of theses.

Over 40% of the annual intake of new Ph.D. students at the Occitanie Ouest area or Ph.D. students at the University of Toulouse (approximately 400 per year) are enrolled at the University of Toulouse.

The Toulouse Doctoral School

All doctoral schools in the Occitanie Ouest area are part of the Toulouse Doctoral School (EDT) of the Toulouse community of universities and institutions (COMUE), whose role is to promote doctoral training in the region.

The Toulouse COMUE Doctoral College has for example contributed to the establishment of:
  • a thesis charter:
  • a single application and registration form for Ph.D. programmes, as well as a single thesis defence form for all institutions;
  • a shared offer of all professional training programmes through a training catalogue built around seven areas, four pathways and employment events.
